the possibilities are endless

Why do I care so much??

I can not state how strongly I care about, love, the scrapbooking industry. It is such a part of my life and who I am. Sometimes I wonder if I care too much-- but I do not think that is possible. What is it I care about? what makes it so important to me? As many of you know I lost a job I loved 2 years ago and for that entire first year I explored other industries, hobbies, fields, publishing, places to put my heart and time into. Nothing compared to what I have come to love as The Scrapbooking Industry.

It is where I have chosen to dedicate my time and talents. I have been a scrapbooker since High School and will continue to be in some form or other my entire life. I will seek out and look for other rewarding past times but I will continue to be focused on this industry, scrapbooking, memory keeping, story telling, whatever you call it.

So what is it I CARE so much about?

  • people telling their own stories and experiencing the magic of scrapbooking
  • introducing people to the hobby and helping them gain the confidence they need to do it!
  • scrapbooking with others and connecting with them on such an intimate level
  • photographing what I love, my family and friends, nature, my home
  • looking at the photographs and contemplating what I care enough about enough to photograph
  • sharing my memory projects and layout with others
  • the people that create the products that serve as a canvas for my memories
  • talented and brave women (and a handful of men) who have dedicated themselves to encouraging and inspiring others
  • the beautiful product waiting to be used
  • people who work in the industry and give their all to keep it going
  • visiting a local scrapbook store and talking with the people who work there about product, projects, tools, techniques, and more
  • the innovation that never stops
  • the willingness of scrapbookers to open their hearts and give

It may not make sense to anyone but me. But I am putting it out there for all to read- I am here to stay and so thrilled with my current opportunities at Ella Publishing and Big Picture Classes as I prepare to head off to the Scrapbooking trade show I am eager to embrace friends, see new product, make partnerships, and look for opportunities to work with others.

For now I am enjoying looking at layouts I have created over the last 10 years.

my scrapbooking start

Often times I get the chance to share about my scrapbooking journey,

where and how I started scrapbooking?

how did I get published the first time?

how did I get the opportunity to author Idiot's guide to scrapbooking?

how I got my former job at the former Simple Scrapbooks magazine?

how has my scrapbooking changed or evolved?

well, and more questions

So I thought this would make a great series of blog posts to share over the few months

and taking cue from all the home decor blogs I want to invite you to participate, tell all or part of your story and leave a link here, on this post, so others can read about your experience.

to participate

  • scroll to the bottom of this post
  • click on the linky text widget
  • it will open a new window where you enter in your information
  • then it will magically show up

(now this is something new so be patient please)

Now on with the show

Using the available resources in early 1992, I made a photo album/scrapbook for my son Taylor's first birthday. At the time my husband was in school and we had no money. Purchasing a ready made fill-in-the blanks scrapbook was out of the question, so I had to get creative. I borrowed a seasonal clip art book from my neighbor and headed to the local copy store. There I purchased cardstock--- the only colors available---and did a literal cut and paste technique to get these month pages. (I believe I used a glue stick for adhesive)  Upon completion of these page I placed them into page protectors.  As for the album, well I had discovered this technique when my mom made one for my wedding snapshots a few years earlier and I made puffy albums for Christmas gifts in 1991, and of course, made one for Tay.

anyone else  use clip art in their scrapbooks? ? ?

how about the cardstock in the neon color palette at their local copy store??

Guess what- ARE YOU STILL READING?? because the above IS NOT MY FIRST SCRAPBOOK

oh no, my first one was done in high school/college

check it out people, I know you want to know the story behind this bad boy- and you will, tomorrow (Tuesday Dec something)

Mini album basket

and I will tell you where I put this quote in my home (clue, look at my stylish banner) tomorrow Tuesday, December something

"The best things you can give children,

next to good habits, are good memories."

Enjoy your day

the start of the giving thanks blog hop week

Welcome to the Giving Thanks {Blog Hop} 2009...

Thanks to some very amazing artists, over the next week, you will be able to hop around the web and find some amazing projects celebrating Gratitude and Creativity. We are very excited to be bringing you a cross-section of artisans, sharing their stories, creations, and thanks with all of you. Not everyone will post something everyday, but, there will be something somewhere everyday. You will just have to hop around and see what you can find. Each person participating has the full list of attendees posted, so you can hop from each one to another. We hope you find something that inspires you, sparks your creativity, or reminds you to be thankful this Thanksgiving. From our house to yours, please enjoy your week and our gratitude...

Handsmile-s

My first share this week is a website that you sign up to visit daily or weekly and list what makes you happy or what you are thankful for. This is a great tool for reminding yourself to be positive. I will be posting a project later on and some more fun things through the week. This will help you remember what you are grateful for and that is a good thing.

I am grateful for libraries. I love to read and could never afford to purchase all the books I read or want to read someday. The library is heaven for me.  I am thankful for my library card.

quick creative project, quote block

that I made this weekend.

A few years ago at the thrift store I purchased a  12 x 12 piece of wood with routed edges (sp?) that had a vinyl saying. I left it up for a while and then decided to do something personal.

Found a favorite quote that I want my kids to read over and over again, printed it out using Centabel book font and found some home decor-ish patterned paper and assembled it all while watching the latest episode of Project Runway.

"Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds."

Gordon B Hinckley

as you can see I fussy cut the flowers with my Exacto in order to layer the patterned paper over the quote, and I added a bit of glitter with stickles, so fun.

Thanks for stopping by

having a good attitude

Remember this post about my struggles with the fall weather? Well so many of you did a spin off of what you liked about this time of year and it made me think of other things I enjoy about the fall.

and

when I was reading the latest Ella book, Happy Scrapbooker, inside was a layout done by Stacy Julian that listed summer memories, and it was a long list.(and a cute page)

Happy-SP1

So

I started jotting down my happy fall thoughts and made a layout

you know it-and it felt like summer for a little bit

Scan0001

Lain Ehmann did a  layout that illustrated the point that happiness doesn't come from stuff but it comes from people and I had to lift that concept.

My son Justin is one of those kids that attracts people, like a magnet. From the time he was old enough to ask for friends to come over and play, he always wanted someone to play with. He preferred playing with friends as a reward instead of getting new toys. The journaling talks about this part of his personality and how we tried to support it.

Scan0002

I appreciated how this book encouraged me to look at parts of my life differently. Now I want one of my readers to also have this chance...

So

Ella Publishing agreed to give one copy away. You have 24 hours to enter, leave a comment and answer the following question

??Has your reason for scrapbooking changed since you first started??

for example, when I started scrapbooking I wanted to make chronological albums of all my kids, now it is a way to share stories, document our daily lives, and be creative.

Contest ends Tuesday, Oct 27 @noon MST, the winner will be announced on Wednesday, along with the winner of the other contest.

Contest Closed

Enjoy!
